Crawford selects the finest Black Cherry, Maple, Ash and Oak lumber for use in our furniture. Because no two trees are alike, each piece of Crawford furniture will be unique and distinctive. These species have many beautiful characteristics such as color variations, ribbon grain, mineral streaks, pin knots, cathedral grain, and pitch pockets. These inherent characteristics add to the natural beauty and unique character of each piece of Crawford furniture. We are proud of our fine furniture that is built to last a lifetime.

Crawford Furniture Means Solid Construction

  • All drawers feature dovetailed joints and tongue-in-groove construction for lasting quality.
  • Drawers feature full box construction and are hand fitted for exceptional strength and durability.
  • Crawford treats our wooden drawer guides with a wax solution to allow for ease of opening and closing. Over time, the wax may wear off. You may re-wax the guides using ordinary paraffin wax found at most hardware stores. Simply rub the inner and outer guides with paraffin until the drawer slides smoothly.
  • Crawford craftsmen use hand clamps when building case pieces to ensure perfect fitting of joints, full floating construction to allow the solid wood furniture to expand and contract with the seasons for the most reliable construction.
  • Mortise-and-tenon joinery and corner block reinforcement prevent shifting of wood during long years of service.
  • Case pieces are fully dust proofed to protect fine clothing.
  • All furniture pieces are corner and edge-sanded, eliminating rough moldings or edges at even the tiniest surfaces, such as the edge next to mirror plates.
  • Each dining table is equipped with a locking device to keep it rigid when not extended. Table slides accommodate extra leaves if desirable.

15 Steps to Creating the Crawford Finish:

1. All surfaces are sanded to ensure a smooth base.
2.
An initial stain is applied to blend the natural wood colors as closely as possible.
3.
All end grain of wood is treated with a sealer so you get a nice even finish.
4.
Base stain is used to maintain natural grain.
5.
A light sealer is added to protect the stain.
6.
All surfaces are hand sanded again so additional operations have a smooth surface.
7.
Next, wiping stain is used to add depth and character to the finish.
8.
A heavy lacquer sealer is applied using a hot Swedish spraying process that assures uniform flow, resulting in a rich body and more durable finish.
9.
Another thorough hand sanding is performed.
10.
A shading stain further blends all wood components.
11.
Hot lacquer is applied for twice the body and depth of cold lacquers. No synthetic lacquers are used, so the Crawford finish never becomes brittle. In fact, it seasons with age and will not check or become chalky.
12.
All drawers are lacquered to assure smooth surface.
13.
The lacquered finish is hand rubbed and polished with extremely fine steel wool for a gleaming surface.
14.
All surfaces are thoroughly cleaned.
15.
Finally, each piece is carefully inspected, point by point, before the Crawford name goes on it.
